Laurelin
the Golden Tree; the younger tree of light
Name and Nature
Laurelin — “the Golden Tree”, the younger of the Two Trees of Valinor — the tree whose light “was as of gold, warm and bright, like the rising sun”: his blossoms and leaves shed the golden radiance whose mingling with Telperion’s silver made the “light of Valinor” and the “double star” of the elder days. In his vigour — he was the glory of the day-side of the timeless realm.
The Legacy
- The sun: From Laurelin’s last golden fruit was made the Sun — destined to the Maia Arien — so that “the light of Laurelin goes always upon the world”.
- Named in the growing days: By the elvish lore of the sun-name, the “Gold” of later suns (Laurelin’s “anar”) underlies the names of the golden ages; his warmth is the ancestor of all summer sunshine in the mythology.
- The death: Pierced (with Telperion) at the hand of Morgoth, drained by Ungoliant — but his fruit saved the light of the world beyond the years of the Trees.
