Telperion
the White Tree; the elder tree of light
Name and Nature
Telperion — “the White Tree”, Silpion in the older names — is the elder of the Two Trees of Valinor, the silver tree whose light “was as of silver, pale and silken”: — his leaves glittered, his blooms gave the pale light of the night. He lived in the “silver hour” — his “waxing” began the count of the Years of the Trees (the “two trees counted the time of the Valar”).
The Kin and the Legacy
- The moon: From Telperion’s last silver flower was made the Moon, borne by Tilion — Telperion’s light lives in the moon above the mortal world.
- The lineage of the white trees: The Elves planted, from a seedling of Telperion, the lesser white tree Galathilion in Tirion; from its seed came the tree of Tol Eressëa (Celeborn); and (through later ages) the White Tree of Númenor and of Gondor spring from this lineage — Telperion is the distant ancestor of every “White Tree” of the later kings.
- The death: Slain by the pierce of Melkor’s spear at the draining by Ungoliant; his ruin for all ages — save in prophecy, the “return”.
