Pengolodh

the Loremaster of the Noldor; the Sage of Gondolin

Name and Role

Pengolodh — called the Sage of Gondolin, and in the later form of the legend the Loremaster of the Noldor — is the recorder to whom the Quenta Silmarillion and the Lhammas (the tale of the tongues) are attributed. He dwelt in Gondolin in the First Age; after the fall he was among the refugees who carried the lore of the Elder Days, gathering and writing down what was remembered.

In the Texts

In the older tradition this office belonged to Rúmil of Valinor; in the later writings (as in Quendi and Eldar) Pengolodh is the principal Elvish authority on the history and languages of the Eldar. The exact years and end of his life are unrecorded: by the design of the legend he is the long-lived keeper of the tradition upon which the great tales depend.
