Rúmil
the Loremaster of Tirion; deviser of the first letters
Name and Role
Rúmil of Tirion was a Loremaster of the Noldor of Valinor, remembered as the deviser of the first letters — the earliest written signs for speech (sometimes called the Rúmilian script after him) — which Fëanor later refined into the Tengwar. He is also the original chronicler of the Elder Days: in the Book of Lost Tales the Music of the Ainur is told to the mariner by Rúmil, sage of the city.
In the Texts
The silmarillion tradition regularly cites him, with the later loremaster Pengolodh, as a source for the annals of Valinor and the lore of the Elves. He remained behind in Aman at the time of the Exile, and has no part in the wars of Beleriand; his great gift to the Noldor was writing itself.
