Name and Kind
The Mearas were the great and noble horses of the plains of Rohan — swift, proud and untameable, the treasure of the kings of the Mark, of the ancient race of the North that only the kings and the Eld could ride. The chief of all was Shadowfax.
In the Tales
They carried the kings of the Eorlingas through all their wars; even of their like it was said that no man had mastered them save the Lord of the Mark, and when the Shadowfax came to Gandalf the bond was a sign of the nearness of the great days.
