Shadowfax
the chief of the Mearas; the horse borne by no hand through the mark
Name and Nature
Shadowfax was the great white-gray stallion of the plains of Rohan, chief of the Mearas — the proud and ancient horses of the kings of the Mark, whose like “has not been seen since” — and he would suffer no man to master him, save none.
The White Rider
When Gandalf returned as the White Rider, the horse ran to him over the pastures of Edoras, and from that hour bore him through the war — carrying him, and the hobbits, and at the last bearing him to the Grey Havens’ road.
