Voronwë
the Steadfast; the mariner whom Ulmo sent to guide Tuor to Gondolin
Names and Lineage
Voronwë — “the Steadfast” — was a Noldo of the kindred of Gondolin, a mariner in the service of King Turgon. In the tale of Tuor he is the sailor of the hidden city who was saved from the sea by the Vala Ulmo and charged to guide the Man Tuor to Gondolin.
Life
- The mariner of the West: Following the counsel of Ulmo, Turgon sent ships westward over the Sea in search of Valinor and of the pardon of the Valar. Of the last of those voyages only Voronwë was saved from the deeps, cast upon the shores of Nevrast, where Ulmo kept him alive against the errand that awaited him.
- The guide of Tuor: On the shore of Nevrast Tuor found the sea-worn mariner and sheltered him; and Ulmo, appearing to Tuor, bade him leave the old havens and seek Gondolin, giving Voronwë to him as guide. Voronwë led Tuor by the hidden ways through the Encircling Mountains and past the outer gates guarded by the wardens of the city — the gate that is called the Gate of the Noldor — until they stood before Turgon in the hidden kingdom and delivered the message of the Lord of Waters.
Significance
Voronwë is Ulmo’s instrument at the hinge of the age: through his steadfastness the counsel of the Deep reaches Gondolin, Tuor enters the city and weds Idril, and from that union — through Eärendil and the Half-elven — spring the hope of the two kindreds and the kings of Númenor.
