Celeborn
the lord of Doriath; the husband of Galadriel
Name and Lineage
Celeborn — “the Silver-tree” — in the tale the Elf of Doriath, a kinsman of King Thingol (in one late tradition of the Teleri, grandson of Olwë; in the earlier, of the Sindar), who wed the Noldorin lady Galadriel in the First Age. Their marriage unites the Grey Elves and the Exiles, and their love is among the few that survive the age unharmed — the Quenta notes that Galadriel.
In the Tale
Celeborn’s part in the Quenta is quiet but noble: a lord of Doriath who stood with Thingol, who (when the doom pressed) counselled against the oath and the ruin — he represents the Sidhe of the Guarded Realm beside his Noldorin wife. -
Their daughter Celebrían belonged to later ages, and their long rule (Eregion, then Lórien) is told in Unfinished Tales (“The History of Galadriel and Celeborn”) — the late text that sorts the variants of his parentage (Doriath vs. Telerin) — one of the most-discussed genealogical questions of the legendarium (Christopher Tolkien treats it in Unfinished Tales and The Peoples of Middle-earth).
Significance
Celeborn is the “third-house consort” — the Elvish prince who stands at Galadriel’s side from the age of the Trees’ twilight to the end of the Third Age, symbol of the unbroken tie between the Sindar and the Exiles, and the quiet anchor of the last great Elvish realm.
