Tengwar
the letters of the Eldar; the developed script of the later ages
Name and Nature
The Tengwar (“letters”) are the developed script of the Eldar — the flowing letters of the Noldor — perfected, the lore says, by Fëanor from the older letters of Rúmil. Each of the classic modes uses the same stem-and-tehta system, “the full writing of the tongues”, in which every sound of the Elvish speech has its sign.
Use
In the later ages the Tengwar were the common writing of the Elves and, through the learning of the Quenta and the letters, of the Dúnedain as well (the system of Appendix E of the Ring-romance). Where the Cirth were the angular runes of the Sindar and Dwarves, the Tengwar were the smooth and curved letters of the high court.
