The Decree

The Hiding of Valinor — the fencing of the West — is the act by which, after the rebellion and flight of the Noldor, the Valar cut off the Blessed Realm from the reach of the world: — the Quenta: — they raised the Enchanted Isles and the “Shadowy Seas” in the way of any who sought Aman, and the mountains grew, so that — the decree: no exile should reach the land until the age’s end, save by the mercy of the Valar.

The Nature

The End

The Hiding endured until the earnest of the last hope: when Eärendil (with the Silmaril and the kinships of both races) sailed the forbidden way in the Vingilot, his voyage pierced the fence, and the Valar, moved, lifted the ban — the host of the West at last went out in the War of Wrath. Thereafter Aman, in the changed world, was removed from the circles (the Akallabêth), and the “hidden land” became a matter of the straight road.

Significance

The Hiding consummates the “separation of the Elves”: the West’s door closed upon the exiles — the mythic shape of the Fall (the fenced Paradise, the closed door) — and the narrative engine that makes Eärendil’s voyage, the greatest feat of the longing for home, of cosmic importance.
