The River
The Hoarwell (Mitheithel) was the grey and foaming river that rose in the Misty Mountains and ran westward through the eastern wild; its steep valleys and the ruins of the old watchtowers guarded the approaches of Rivendell.
In the Tale
The old East Road crossed the Hoarwell at the Last Bridge, and there in the time of the Ring’s quest the Black Riders were felt to have passed; the Rangers and the hobbits both looked on its grey water.
