The Haven
Umbar was the great haven built by the Númenóreans in the southlands, the chief of their fortresses in Middle-earth and the anchor of their ships of conquest; its lords drew the tribute of the South, and its strength was long unassailable.
Later Age
After the Downfall Umbar fell to the King’s Men who had served Sauron; it was blackened with their enmity and became the seat of the corsairs and the chief ally of the Haradrim against Gondor, and its walls were won and lost many times in the wars of the later kingdoms.
